This is compounded by linguistic and cultural differences, and limited access to education, basic services, and psychosocial support.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Solution:<\/strong> An innovative, psychosocially informed digital solution, designed in collaboration with displaced youth and artists, to actively involve their peers in digital arts literacy, engage in community projects for artistic and emotional development, and connect across regions through virtual reality meet-ups.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Expected results:<\/strong> 100 young refugees connect with each other and gain digital, creative, and emotional literacy skills, for greater social connection, self-expression, and overall wellbeing. A further 2,500 individuals benefit indirectly as a result of enhanced community resilience.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>[\/et_pb_toggle][et_pb_toggle title=&#8221;Refugee-led observatory to optimize digital information access for refugees with disabilities \u2013 Poland&#8221; admin_label=&#8221;Turning digital leisure into an empowerment tool, Skopje, North Macedonia&#8221; _builder_version=&#8221;4.23.1&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221;]<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Challenge:<\/strong> Refugees with disabilities, particularly those with visual impairments, struggle to access critical information via online channels extensively used by humanitarian and governmental actors, undermining their ability to access social and protection services.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Solution:<\/strong> Establish a refugee-led observatory to advise humanitarian and other actors on how to improve online community engagement \u2013 with a particular focus on refugees with visual impairments \u2013 based on best practices and current information accessibility as experienced by refugees.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Expected results:<\/strong> 38,000 Ukrainian refugees with visual impairments in Poland could benefit from improved access to digital information and, as a result, services. Evidence-based tools developed and shared will ensure accessible communications going forward.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>[\/et_pb_toggle][et_pb_toggle title=&#8221;AI-Driven Digital Feedback AAP \u2013 Jordan &#8221; admin_label=&#8221;E-commerce skills to support livelihoods, Boa Vista, Roraima, Brazil&#8221; _builder_version=&#8221;4.27.4&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221;]<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Challenge:<\/strong> UNHCR receives a high volume of communications and requests from forcibly displaced and stateless persons, which are currently processed and answered manually. This is labor intensive, time consuming, and not conducive to providing timely assistance and ensuring accountability to affected populations (AAP).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Solution:<\/strong> Develop an efficient mechanism to process requests using digital petition boxes equipped with AI-supported processing and analysis of text and audio submissions, leading to improved response rates. The centralized system will identify duplicates and extract data that could help UNHCR respond more efficiently.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Expected results:<\/strong> Improved response time to requests, resulting in more effective delivery of services, potentially directly benefiting 650,000 refugees and asylum seekers. Enhanced data-driven decision making provides broader benefits to communities we work with and for.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>[\/et_pb_toggle][et_pb_toggle title=&#8221;Labor mobility pathways through digital skills and internships \u2013 Indonesia&#8221; admin_label=&#8221;Community connectivity and digital skills, Guayaquil, Ecuador&#8221; _builder_version=&#8221;4.23.1&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221;]<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Challenge:<\/strong> Refugees can struggle to access traditional employment due to their legal and documentation status. Digital livelihoods offer opportunities for economic empowerment, but refugees often lack the necessary skills, experience and digital access to take advantage of these opportunities.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Solution:<\/strong> Establish a phased digital livelihood strategy to facilitate learning-to-earning pathways, building on findings from a recent project. This will include training in IT skills, internships with identified partners that are crucial for future employability, and connections to work opportunities in third countries.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Expected results:<\/strong> 160 refugees benefit directly from the training programme, with greater access to livelihoods and labor mobility options. Peer-to-peer learning and acquisition of skills that are highly sought after in receiving countries amplify chances of success. <\/span><\/p>\n<p>[\/et_pb_toggle][et_pb_toggle title=&#8221;RefJam: Video games as an empowerment tool \u2013 North Macedonia&#8221; admin_label=&#8221;Online registry to boost employment opportunities, Lima, Peru&#8221; _builder_version=&#8221;4.23.1&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221;]<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Challenge:<\/strong> Despite the huge audience and relevance of video games worldwide, humanitarian organizations have very limited engagement with video games as a potential tool to empower and include forcibly displaced and stateless people both socially and economically.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Solution:<\/strong> Unlock the potential of gaming as a vehicle for digital livelihoods, wellbeing, and integration through game-design workshops, a game-development festival, and an incubator programme for selected teams to develop prototypes.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Expected results:<\/strong> Informed by an existing feasibility study and robust community engagement, the \u201cRefJam\u201d project will empower around 500 displaced and stateless gaming enthusiasts to tell their stories, build community, develop digital skills, and access digital livelihoods. <\/span><\/p>\n<p>[\/et_pb_toggle][et_pb_toggle title=&#8221;Cybersecurity for refugees by refugees \u2013 Panama and the Americas&#8221; admin_label=&#8221;Digital skills mentorship to facilitate online livelihoods, Dzaleka refugee camp, Malawi&#8221; _builder_version=&#8221;4.23.1&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221;]<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Challenge:<\/strong> Displaced people are at high risk of exposure to mis\/disinformation, cybercrime, and cybersecurity risks, due to the increased collection of identifiable personal information, data breaches, and targeted attacks. Capacity among humanitarians and displaced communities to mitigate these digital risks is lacking.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Solution:<\/strong> Develop an educational programme (available as a web app) to build the capacity of humanitarian actors, refugees, and migrants in the areas of cybersecurity, cyber threats, and digital protection. These cybersecurity champions will cascade learnings across communities.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Expected results:<\/strong> 200 humanitarian staff members and more than 1,000 refugees and migrants directly benefit from strengthened digital skills and awareness to prevent and mitigate online risks like fraud, extortion, phishing, and more, spreading skills and awareness more widely.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>[\/et_pb_toggle][et_pb_toggle title=&#8221;Strengthening UNHCR human rights due diligence with digital technology \u2013 Global&#8221; admin_label=&#8221;Career counselling for greater access to work and education opportunities, Mahama, Nyabiheke, Kiziba, Kigeme, and Mugombwa refugee camps, Huye, and Kigali, Rwanda&#8221; _builder_version=&#8221;4.23.1&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221;]<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Challenge:<\/strong> There is no comprehensive internal guidance or tool for human rights due diligence in UNHCR\u2019s use of digital technology, which results in gaps or inconsistencies in applying UNHCR\u2019s existing policies and tools and may lead to human rights risks not being adequately identified or mitigated.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Solution:<\/strong> Strengthen guidance and explore, in partnership with the Global Digital Service, how a user-friendly, efficient digital tool can support UNHCR colleagues to apply strengthened human rights due diligence processes to digital projects, by identifying risks and treatments as well as pointing colleagues toward relevant resources and support.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Expected results:<\/strong> A digital human-rights due diligence tool and stronger guidance to help all digital projects meet the principles of UNHCR\u2019s Digital Transformation Strategy. This streamlined and standardized approach will effectively identify potential adverse human rights impacts, enhance protection outcomes, prevent\/mitigate risks of harm, and support innovation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>[\/et_pb_toggle][et_pb_toggle title=&#8221;Generating evidence to inform digital solutions to legal needs \u2013 South Africa&#8221; admin_label=&#8221;Digital literacy and digital safety training, Jakarta and surrounding areas, Indonesia&#8221; _builder_version=&#8221;4.23.1&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221;]<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Challenge:<\/strong> Forcibly displaced and stateless people often struggle to access legal services. Delivering such services to these scattered communities is tough in a context of limited resources and challenging protection needs. Civil society legal actors\u2019 digital endeavors have not necessarily been guided by the needs of the legal community and refugees.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Solution:<\/strong> Assess the needs and challenges of forcibly displaced people, in remote and urban areas, in accessing legal support, as well as the needs, capacity, and digital expertise of legal actors. Insights will inform future work on digital tools to enhance access to legal services and strengthen an emerging regional network of practitioners.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Expected results:<\/strong> Robust evidence generated to shape digital solutions addressing the identified needs and gaps, ensuring the trustworthiness, efficiency, and contextual appropriateness of these solutions. Access to legal services enhanced, and capacity of legal practitioners boosted.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>[\/et_pb_toggle][et_pb_toggle title=&#8221;Digital bridges for Afghan scholars \u2013 Iran&#8221; admin_label=&#8221;Digital bridges for Afghan scholars, Iran&#8221; _builder_version=&#8221;4.23.1&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221;]<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Challenge:<\/strong> Document requirements, financial constraints, language barriers, complex application processes, and identifying appropriate scholarships all present hurdles to refugee students \u2013 including Afghan women and girls \u2013 in accessing education pathways. For UNHCR, community engagement and communications are also challenging in this context.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Solution:<\/strong> Bridge information gaps to empower Afghan refugee students to access overseas study opportunities, through online sessions with successful scholarship holders and a digital mentorship programme. It is designed to rekindle the desire for education among refugee children, enhance their holistic development, and promote inclusion of children with disabilities.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>[\/et_pb_toggle][et_pb_toggle title=&#8221;Art therapy for displaced children with disabilities \u2013 Humanitarian Cooperation Foundation for People with Disabilities \u2013 Yemen&#8221; admin_label=&#8221;23&#8243; _builder_version=&#8221;4.23.1&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221;]<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Challenge:<\/strong> Displaced children with disabilities in Yemen face unequal access to essential services, a lack of necessary resources and equipment, and communication difficulties, which encompass comprehension, social communication, and emotional and social challenges.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Solution:<\/strong> The <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/MoonaAlkaseer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Humanitarian Cooperation Foundation<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> will provide art therapy to displaced children with disabilities, with activities including needs assessment and cooperation with external organizations to address the unique challenges these children face in adapting to their new environment and improving their quality of life.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Expected results:<\/strong> The project will improve the mental health of up to 300 children with disabilities from the displaced and host communities, as well as strengthening trauma coping mechanisms, enhancing communication and social skills, developing creative abilities, boosting self-confidence, and providing support and awareness to families.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>[\/et_pb_toggle][et_pb_toggle title=&#8221;Queer &#038; Trans Refugees Advisory Network-Africa (QTRAN-Africa) \u2013 Rainbow Refuge Africa \u2013 South Africa&#8221; disabled_on=&#8221;on|on|on&#8221; admin_label=&#8221;24&#8243; _builder_version=&#8221;4.25.0&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; disabled=&#8221;on&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221;]<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Challenge:<\/strong> In South Africa, organizations of LGBTQI+ refugees and asylum seekers face challenges to come together to advocate for themselves and participate in decision making processes. This lack of participation and representation stymies the development of public policies that respond to their specific needs and promote local integration.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Solution:<\/strong> Rainbow Refuge Africa will establish QTRAN-Africa \u2013 a collective of African activists and advocates with lived experience of displacement \u2013 to help drive policies led by LGBTQI+ refugees and support LGBTQI+ refugees and asylum seekers in South Africa to achieve self-reliance.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Expected results:<\/strong> This network will boost the representation of LGBTQI+ refugees on regional and global advocacy platforms, ensure their participation in decision-making that affects them, and increase the socioeconomic integration of LGBTQI+ refugees in South Africa. <\/span><\/p>\n<p>[\/et_pb_toggle][et_pb_toggle title=&#8221;Pocha House: Seeding art, sowing action \u2013 Otros Dreams en Acci\u00f3n (ODA) \u2013 Mexico&#8221; admin_label=&#8221;25&#8243; _builder_version=&#8221;4.23.1&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221;]<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Challenge:<\/strong> Undocumented people who are deported from the US back to Mexico face discrimination, stigma, and mental health issues. Many were taken to the US as children, so don\u2019t speak Spanish or have a close connection to the territory or community to which they have returned. Many struggle with family separation.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Solution: <\/strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.odamexico.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ODA<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> will bring together people across Mexico who have been deported from the US, creating a space for healing and organizing through the use of art methodologies. This will scale up an existing community-building initiative known as the Pocha House, and use both in-person and virtual spaces.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Expected results:<\/strong> Through \u201cartivism\u201d and collective action, this project will address feelings of isolation and powerlessness, empowering individuals, returning their sense of agency, and fostering connection, healing, belonging, and community.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>[\/et_pb_toggle][et_pb_toggle title=&#8221;Scaling up handicraft business for livelihoods \u2013 Zaatari Camp Creations \u2013 Jordan&#8221; disabled_on=&#8221;on|on|on&#8221; admin_label=&#8221;26&#8243; _builder_version=&#8221;4.23.1&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; disabled=&#8221;on&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221;]<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Challenge:<\/strong> In Jordan\u2019s Zaatari refugee camp, residents struggle to engage in livelihoods and income generating activities due to a scarcity of job opportunities, persistent gender norms, inaccessibility, and low wages. Many rely on humanitarian aid as a source of income, which often isn\u2019t enough to cover basic needs.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Solution:<\/strong> Zaatari Camp Creations will scale up an existing business initiative that is providing a source of income for families in the camp through the creation of unique handcrafted products that promote Syrian and Arab cultural traditions.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Expected results:<\/strong> The project will expand livelihood opportunities for refugees, provide new skills and training to participants, and enhance social cohesion among refugees and their hosts.\u00a0 <\/span><\/p>\n<p>[\/et_pb_toggle][et_pb_toggle title=&#8221;Drama workshops for youth wellbeing \u2013 Education for Peace \u2013 South Sudan&#8221; admin_label=&#8221;26&#8243; _builder_version=&#8221;4.25.0&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221;]<\/p>\n<p><strong>Challenge:<\/strong><span> Sudanese refugee arrivals have strained Renk\u2019s education system, with many children missing out schooling and suffering from a lack of outlets for positive, creative expression. This exacerbates mental health issues and worsens relationships between camp residents and host communities.\u200b<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Solution:<\/strong><span> Education for Peace will conduct a teacher-training programme, targeting teachers and potential teaching assistants in the community. Drama workshops, radio plays, puppet shows, and sports competitions will help youth address conflicts, accept differences, and develop a sense of belonging, while a documentary will be produced to raise awareness of refugee talent.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Expected results:<\/strong><span> 60 teachers will receive teacher training to improve the quality of education offered to youth, while 500 young people will benefit from drama workshops. Displaced youth will organize a month-long drama festival, with the participation of host communities, showcasing the peace-building potential of drama and education.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><em>Endorsed in 2022, this project was delayed by evolving realities in Sudan.
