{"id":2995,"date":"2015-10-23T11:06:57","date_gmt":"2015-10-23T11:06:57","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/innovation.unhcr.org\/?p=2995"},"modified":"2017-06-29T09:58:30","modified_gmt":"2017-06-29T09:58:30","slug":"5-lessons-learned-from-rolling-out-joint-innovative-shelter-projects","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.unhcr.org\/innovation\/5-lessons-learned-from-rolling-out-joint-innovative-shelter-projects\/","title":{"rendered":"5 lessons learned from rolling out joint innovative shelter projects"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>This is an excerpt from UNHCR\u2019s recently released report: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.unhcr.org\/innovation\/report2014\/\" target=\"_blank\">Innovation at UNHCR 2014<\/a>.\u00a0This report highlights and showcases some of the innovative approaches the organization is taking to address complex refugee challenges.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Through the Home Lab, UNHCR\u00a0Innovation and the Division\u00a0of Program Support and\u00a0Management\u2019s Shelter and Settlements\u00a0Section have collaborated in rolling out\u00a0the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.unhcr.org\/innovation\/labs_post\/refugee-housing-unit\/\" target=\"_blank\">Better Shelter<\/a> project. We\u2019ve learned\u00a0several key lessons in rolling out this\u00a0project.<\/p>\n<p>Here are five of them:<\/p>\n<h2>Lesson 1:<\/h2>\n<p>The trajectory of the Better Shelter\u00a0project \u2013 like any innovation project\u00a0\u2013 is not a straight path. It\u2019s more\u00a0like entering a dark tunnel without\u00a0knowing where the exit is.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-3022\" src=\"https:\/\/www.unhcr.org\/innovation\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/alexander2.png\" alt=\"Photo of the design thinking method\" width=\"600\" height=\"238\" \/><\/p>\n<h2>Lesson 2:<\/h2>\n<p>Innovation projects are more than an\u00a0idea; they require action. We learned\u00a0how to move fast and convert the\u00a0idea to a practical solution.<\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 640px;\" class=\"wp-video\"><video class=\"wp-video-shortcode\" id=\"video-2995-1\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" loop preload=\"metadata\" controls=\"controls\"><source type=\"video\/mp4\" src=\"\/\/innovation.unhcr.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/Better-Shelter-timelapse-assembly-1.mp4?_=1\" \/><a href=\"\/\/innovation.unhcr.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/Better-Shelter-timelapse-assembly-1.mp4\">\/\/innovation.unhcr.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/Better-Shelter-timelapse-assembly-1.mp4<\/a><\/video><\/div>\n<h2>Lesson 3:<\/h2>\n<p>The Better Shelter innovation\u00a0project was a Research and\u00a0Development project with an\u00a0invisible future.
