Icelandic contributions to UNHCR
Iceland is a reliable donor and partner to UNHCR. In 2022, Iceland more than doubled its funding to UNHCR, making it our 7th biggest donor per capita.
Facts about Iceland as a donor:
- In 2022, Iceland’s total contribution to UNHCR amounted to approximately USD 4.2 million.
- Of the total 2022 contribution, USD 1.1 million went towards UNHCR’s response to the Ukraine situation.
- Iceland also provided support for UNHCR’s Afghanistan response and for the Sahel situation.
- Iceland has also provided consistent support for UNHCR efforts in Syria.

Two events on statelessness organized in Iceland
Together with the Icelandic Directorate of Immigration, UNHCR organized an open seminar, highlighting Iceland’s accession to the Statelessness Conventions and the progress of the #IBelong-campaign, as well as a technical workshop for legal practitioners.
Iceland provides vital support to the urgent displacement crisis in the Sahel
Moumouni Abdoulaye is amongst the 2.7 million people in Africa’s Sahel region forced to flee from home in search for safety. A new contribution from Iceland enables UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency, to protect refugees like him and his family.
Iceland strengthens UNHCR partnership with 3-year agreement on additional support to refugees
On 27 February 2017, Iceland signed a 3-year agreement with UNHCR including additional support to UNHCR of a minimum of 50 million Icelandic Kronur, an important milestone in the partnership between Iceland and UNHCR.
