Tampa Boys rescued by Norwegian freighter become New Zealand citizens
In August 2001, 37 unaccompanied teenagers were among those rescued at sea from a sinking fishing boat in the Indian Ocean by the Norwegian container ship the MV Tampa. The Tampa Boys, as they became known, were accepted by New Zealand as refugees and today were some of the 76 refugees from the Tampa who gained New Zealand citizenship.
