UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency, holds a long-lasting partnership with the Ministry for Human Rights and Refugees of Bosnia and Herzegovina working together for many years for the benefit of people displaced by conflict.
On their first meeting of 2021, Minister Miloš Lučić and UNHCR Representative in BiH, Lucie Gagné discussed the possible ways forward to eradicate the remaining stateless population. Despite the considerable progress made, it would be crucial to find a solution for the remaining stateless individuals living in BiH.
With regards to people who have been formally granted protection in Bosnia and Herzegovina, the minister and the representative discussed about next steps needed for the establishment of a framework and action plan to facilitate the local integration of these individuals.
There are currently 140 people granted refugee status or subsidiary protection in the country.
Many have been living in the country fruitfully for several years and seen as valuable addition to the communities they live in. Some are however in need of some support to fully integrate in their new community and be able to have a place to call home.
