Seventeen people were killed, including four of her children.  Others were savagely mutilated, including Madeleine who was 8 months pregnant at the time.  She and her baby survived. ; The Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) hosts more than half a million refugees and asylum seekers.  Some 5.6 million people have also been internally displaced &#8211; one of the largest internally displaced populations in the world &#8211; with more than 4 million in the eastern provinces of South Kivu, North Kivu and Ituri, where armed groups have continued to attack displaced civilians.  Almost 1 million Congolese refugees have been displaced into neighbouring countries due to the violence, while in Bunia city alone, nearly 40,000 people have been forced to flee their homes.
