Living conditions are difficult there, many people only eat one meal a day, and some children show signs of malnourishment. Men, women and children try to find menial jobs every day to be able to buy food for their families. Every day is about survival. The site hosts 40,000 internally displaced people who previously fled their homes following attacks by armed men. The displaced have not been able to return to their villages or fields which are now controlled by the armed groups. The few IDPs who have attempted to return have been kidnapped and killed. Behind the attacks on civilians, is a desire by armed groups to control the mineral wealth in Ituri, a province territory rich in gold. ; At least 5.6 million people are displaced inside the DRC, the largest internal displacement situation in Africa. Some 132 armed groups across the eastern regions of the country – operating predominantly in Ituri, North Kivu and South Kivu provinces – continue to target civilians in a growing number of deadly attacks, leading to increased displacement, killings, and human rights abuses. In Ituri province alone, 1,8 million are displaced in settlements or villages as a result of brutal attacks, mainly by the CODECO (Cooperative for Development of the Congo) and the ADF (Allied Democratic Forces) militia groups. The IDP situation in eastern DRC is part of a wider regional crisis relating to a struggle for control of land and resources as well as fragile infrastructure in the region. The country also hosts 571,000 refugees and asylum seekers. UNHCR is appealing for increased funding to adequately support the rising needs of the displaced in the DRC. More than 1 million Congolese people have also found refuge in neighbouring countries, fleeing recurring violence.<\/p>\n"},"caption":{"rendered":"
Early morning in Plain Savo IDP site.
