SNP MPs raise over £10,000 for the UN Refugee Agency
Three SNP MPs have today (Wednesday 20 January 2016) handed a cheque to UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency, for £10,420.
The five figure sum was raised at a charity auction hosted by Tasmina Ahmed-Sheikh MP (Ochil and South Perthshire), Alex Salmond MP (Gordon) and Stephen Gethins MP (North East Fife) at the Marcliffe Hotel in Aberdeen.
Commenting, Ms Ahmed-Sheikh said:
"Having visited a UNHCR camp in Gaziantep in Turkey with Stephen Gethins, I have witnessed just how difficult life can be for people who been displaced by war.
"Organisations like UNHCR are vital to ensuring that these victims of conflict have access to shelter, food and safety.
"I am delighted that we have been able to help contribute to the aid effort. I have to say a massive thank you to the Marcliffe Hotel and all the the donors."
Gonzalo Vargas Llosa, UNHCR Representative to the UK, said:
"I'm sincerely grateful to the Scottish people who have once again shown their generosity towards refugees.
"The money raised will help UNHCR to provide much needed emergency supplies including shelter, blankets and medical supplies.
"I can't thank Alex Salmond, Tasmina Ahmed-Sheikh, Stephen Gethins and their SNP colleagues enough for all they are doing to raise funds and awareness of the tragic circumstances being faced by refugees who have lost everything."
