The Struggle To Go To School

t's one of the hardest choices Iraqi refugee families have to make -- whether to send their children to school or to work. Even though Syria has opened its classrooms to Iraqi students, a growing number of refugee families simply cannot afford to send their children to school. UNHCR has launched projects to ensure that more Iraqi children access education, including remedial learning programmes for those who have missed years of class. For the protection of those interviewed, names have been changed and faces masked.

UN High Commissioner Visits Somalis in Kenya

In a visit to the sprawling Dadaab refugee camp on the Kenya-Somalia border in advance of World Refugee Day on Friday, the UN refugee agency chief, António Guterres said a political solution must be found to end the violence in Somalia and he acknowledged that UNHCR had to do more to help those uprooted by the 17-year conflict. Dadaab hosts 200,000 refugees with 20,000 new arrivals from Somali since January.

Georgia: UNHCR Aid

The UN refugee responded immediately to the crisis in Georgia by distributing aid and shelter to the displaced. An estimated 158,000 people fled their homes. Some have returned home; others are too afraid to go back.
