A Solar Lamp lighting the path to Lucienne’s dream

Burkina Faso. KSrelief funded project supports the distribution of core relief items to vulnerable internally displaced persons and host communities
Lucienne Yougbaré, a 13-year-old internally displaced girl revises her lessons using the new solar lamp she has just received in Tibga, Gulmu region.

At just 13 years old, Yougbaré Lucienne, has already faced challenges that no child should have to endure. Forced to flee her village of Nassobdou with her mother and four siblings because of armed attacks, she now lives in Tibga, in Burkina Faso's Eastern region.

A little, after they settled in Tibga, Lucienne's mother, Cathérine Sawadogo, 47, has been raising her five children alone since the death of her husband six years ago. When violence forced the family to flee, they left everything behind.

"We could not take anything with us during our flight," Cathérine recalls. "Without these items, our living conditions were truly miserable. Thanks to your support, we can now cook with our own utensils and live with greater dignity."

Through the project funded by the King Salman Humanitarian Aid and Relief Centre (KSrelief), Cathérine's household received essential non-food items, including cooking utensils, blankets, and a solar lamp. For the family, these items represent far more than material assistance. They offer comfort, dignity and hope at a time of great uncertainty.

Sitting inside the modest shelter made of iron sheets that now serves as their home, Lucienne carefully examines the solar lamp she has just received. A sixth-grade student, she immediately recognizes how important it will be for her education.

"Before, I used an old flashlight that was damaged and repaired several times to study at night," she says with a smile. "I am very happy to have received this new lamp. Now I can learn my lessons better after dark."

Lucienne Yougbaré, a 13-year-old internally displaced girl rejoices as she has just received a new solar lamp in Tibga, Gulmu region.

Like many internally displaced children, Lucienne faces numerous obstacles in her pursuit of education. Yet she remains determined. Her dream is to become a teacher one day and help educate future generations.

The solar lamp may seem like a simple item, but for Lucienne it is a powerful tool that enables her to continue learning despite displacement and hardship. By providing vulnerable families with essential household items, the KSrelief-funded project helps restore a sense of normality and create opportunities for children to pursue their aspirations.

For Cathérine, however, the struggle is not over. To support her family, she sells small quantities of cereals in the local market. While the assistance received has significantly improved their living conditions, she hopes to obtain financial support to strengthen her business and become more self-reliant.

Despite these challenges, the family looks to the future with renewed hope.

"Our joy is immense, and we do not know how to thank you enough," Cathérine says.

For Lucienne, the glow of a solar lamp now illuminates more than her copybooks. It lights the path toward a brighter future and brings her one step closer to achieving her dream of becoming a teacher.
