Mexico
In 2022, Mexico hosted 498,226 refugees, asylum-seekers, stateless persons and other persons needing international protection, most of them coming from Venezuela, Honduras, Haiti and Cuba.
With 58,000 new asylum applications in the first half of 2022, Mexico has become a significant destination country for people in need of international protection in the Americas, and a main transit area for thousands of people engaged in increasing northbound mixed movements. As a result of mass events due to violence from 2006 to 2021, 379,246 people have also been internally displaced in Mexico.
UNHCR supports the Government of Mexico's efforts to safeguard the rights and well-being of people who have been forced to flee their home countries. We work to ensure that people fleeing violence and persecution are able to receive protection and apply for asylum. UNHCR also promotes durable solutions that foster local integration through close collaboration with partners and host communities.
