UNHCR shares safety reminders for people on the move

30 July 2026

UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency, is reminding refugees, asylum-seekers and other people on the move of practical steps they can take to protect themselves and their families from exploitation.

People on the move are often targeted by individuals who seek to exploit their hopes for a safe future. To help prevent harm, UNHCR is highlighting the following key messages:

  • Beware of fraud. Anyone promising guaranteed relocation or movement to a third country, including through Belarus, in exchange for money is not to be trusted. Such offers are fraudulent and can put people at serious risk.

Weigh your decision carefully. Departing the country in which you are currently residing on your own initiative may result in the loss of the legal status granted to you there. Applications for protection (asylum) are examined in each country in accordance with its own legislation and procedures, and protection granted in one state does not guarantee that another state will also grant protection or allow you to remain in its territory.

Travel safely. Crossing a border without a valid passport or travel document can put you and your family members at risk of detention, family separation and removal (deportation or expulsion) to your country of origin.

Assistance is always free. UNHCR and its partner organizations never charge for any service or form of assistance. If anyone asks you to pay for help provided by UNHCR or a partner organization, please report it immediately by email to [email protected].

These cards are shared as the international community observes the World Day against Trafficking in Persons, a moment that underscores the importance of staying informed and vigilant against exploitation. UNHCR encourages all those in need of information or support to reach out through official channels and to rely only on verified sources.
