UNHCR has signed a General Cooperation Agreement with AXON Plus to enhance access to affordable health care for refugees registered with UNHCR in Egypt.

Cairo, Egypt, 4 March 2026 – UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency, has signed a General Cooperation Agreement with AXON Plus to enhance access to affordable health care for refugees registered with UNHCR in Egypt.

Through this partnership, refugees will gain access to cost-effective medical services and a range of digital health features via AXON Plus Application. The initiative will connect refugees to a broad network of private medical providers across the country and help ease financial barriers to essential care.

“Expanding access to affordable health care is vital for refugees in Egypt, particularly as needs continue to grow while resources remain limited,” said Dr. Hanan Hamdan, UNHCR Representative to the Arab Republic of Egypt and to the League of Arab States. “Collaborating with responsible private sector partners allows us to widen access to health services that meet humanitarian standards, ensuring protection and dignity remain at the heart of our response.”

“At AXON, we believe access to healthcare is essential for everyone. Partnering with UNHCR allows us to support refugees in Egypt with practical, affordable solutions that improve everyday health. As a digitalized health platform, we are equally committed to delivering care in a sustainable way—ensuring long-term impact for people,” said Mr. Karim Ahmed Saber, AXON Managing Director.

Egypt currently hosts more than 1.1 million registered refugees and asylum-seekers from diverse nationalities. While the Government of Egypt continues to generously host those fleeing conflict and persecution, the growing scale and protracted nature of displacement, combined with constrained humanitarian funding, are placing increasing strain on available services. For many refugees, particularly those living with chronic illnesses or specific medical conditions, access to affordable and quality health care remains a significant challenge.

By partnering with the private sector, UNHCR seeks to strengthen resilience and inclusion among refugees in Egypt. The collaboration with AXON exemplifies how innovative partnerships can complement humanitarian assistance by promoting sustainable access to essential services and supporting the overall well-being of displaced communities.
