Figures at a glance in Malaysia

As of end April 2024, there are some 188,210 refugees and asylum-seekers registered with UNHCR in Malaysia. 

As of end April 2024, there are some 188,210 refugees and asylum-seekers registered with UNHCR in Malaysia. 

  • Some 164,130 are from Myanmar, comprising some 108,860 Rohingyas, 25,930 Chins, and 30,570 other ethnic groups from conflict-affected areas or fleeing persecution in Myanmar. 
  • The remaining individuals are some 22,830 refugees and asylum-seekers from 50 countries fleeing war and persecution, including some 6,170 Pakistanis, 3,280 Yemenis, 2,820 Syrians, 2,780 Afghans, 2,780 Somalis, 1,260 Sri Lankans, 650 Iraqis, 630 Palestinians, and others. 

Some 65% of refugees and asylum-seekers are men, while 35% are women.

There are some 52,270 children below the age of 18.

 

UNHCR statistics does not map or reflect new arrivals into the country. 
    
Any increase in numbers of registered refugees are as a result of UNHCR’s own capacity to conduct registration.

According to data obtained from refugees, in general, there have been no significant refugee arrivals since 2013, and total numbers of overall new arrivals have declined significantly from then until now.
