As of end September 2024, there are some 191,830 refugees and asylum-seekers registered with UNHCR in Malaysia.
· Some 169,610 are from Myanmar, comprising some 110,820 Rohingyas, 27,580 Chins, and 31,200 other ethnic groups from conflict-affected areas or fleeing persecution in Myanmar.
· The remaining individuals are some 22,210 refugees and asylum-seekers from 50 countries fleeing war and persecution, including some 5,940 Pakistanis, 3,160 Yemenis, 2,830 Somalis, 2,840 Afghans, 2,740 Syrians, 1,130 Sri Lankans, 590 Palestinians, 530 Iraqis, and others.
Some 65% of refugees and asylum-seekers are men, while 35% are women.
There are some 54,450 children below the age of 18.
Any increase in numbers of registered refugees are as a result of UNHCR’s own capacity to conduct registration.
According to data obtained from refugees, in general, there have been no significant refugee arrivals since 2013, and total numbers of overall new arrivals have declined significantly from then until now.
