As of end October 2021, there are some 179,830 refugees and asylum-seekers registered with UNHCR in Malaysia.
- Some 155,030 are from Myanmar, comprising some 103,090 Rohingyas, 22,540 Chins, and 29,330 other ethnic groups from conflict-affected areas or fleeing persecution in Myanmar.
- The remaining individuals are some 24,800 refugees and asylum-seekers from 50 countries fleeing war and persecution, including some 6,690 Pakistanis, 3,700 Yemenis, 3,280 Syrians, 3,200 Somalis, 2,730 Afghans, 1,680 Sri Lankans, 1,200 Iraqis, 770 Palestinians, and others.
Some 68% of refugees and asylum-seekers are men, while 32% are women.
There are some 45,870 children below the age of 18.
UNHCR statistics does not map or reflect new arrivals into the country.
Any increase in numbers of registered refugees are as a result of UNHCR’s own capacity to conduct registration.
According to data obtained from refugees, in general, there have been no significant refugee arrivals since 2013, and total numbers of overall new arrivals have declined significantly from then until now.
