Help the Uprooted and Stateless
The Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees was established on December 14, 1950 by the United Nations General Assembly.
The agency is mandated to lead and co-ordinate international action to protect refugees and resolve refugee problems worldwide. Its primary purpose is to safeguard the rights and well-being of refugees. It strives to ensure that everyone can exercise the right to seek asylum and find safe refuge in another State, with the option to return home voluntarily, integrate locally or to resettle in a third country.
In more than five decades, the agency has helped people restart their lives. Today, a staff of around 6,650 people in more than 110 countries continues to help 34.4 million people.
Voluntary Repatriation
UNHCR supports the return of refugees only when conditions for return can be guaranteed to be voluntary, safe and dignified. Prospects for returning home for most Togolese in Ghana, many of whom have lived in Ghana for over 20 years continue to be very limited.
Integration
Education is the cornerstone to sustainability and prosperity of every refugee. In Ghana, in accordance with the Global Compact on refugees. Education is integrated into the national systems. UNHCR Ghana works closely with the Ghana Education Service in ensuring quality education at the various camps hosting refugees and in the urban settings.
