3.06 UNHCR 13 July 1956 Professor Konstantinos Efstathiadis, the Greek Representative to the United Nations Economic and Social Council, in a speech to the Council pays tribute to the first United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, Dr. van Heuven Goedhart, who passed away on 8 July 1956. The Greek Representative proposes crafting a bust from Tinos marble, commemorating the departed’s initiative in using the monetary award from the 1954 Nobel Peace Prize to support the endeavours of UNHCR on the island and the closure of the refugee centre that had been established there. In addition, he suggested for the bust to be placed at the UNHCR Headquarters. |
