World Refugee Day 2002: Moldova, Republic of
For the fourth time, UNHCR organised the concert "Rock for Refugees" on 29 May, with the participation of famous bands including "Zdob si Zdub", "The Snails", and "Akcent". The event was attended by representatives of the international community, government officials, NGOs, the public at large, asylum-seekers, and refugees.
UNHCR's partner organisation "Charity Centre for Refugees" organised a "Refugee Party" on 26 June. Refugees and asylum-seekers presented their traditional dance and music. The event was attended by NGOs, local authorities and UN staff, and it was covered by the media.
Another organisation "Society for Refugees" set up a photo exhibition "Do not forget the less fortunate", which shows UNHCR's work in Moldova. This project was realised with support from the SOROS Foundation. The inauguration took place at the Writers Union, and the exhibition will continue at the Free Independent University, State University, school in Dorotcaia, UNICEF and UNHCR offices. Part of the exhibit was displayed at the Parliament during the seminar "Implementation of the 1951 Convention Relating to the Refugee Status/ 1967 Protocol in Moldova" organised by UNHCR on 28 and 29 June.
