World Refugee Day 2004 National Activity Plan: Turkmenistan

From 8-18 June, World Refugee Day will be celebrated in the refugee settlements of Akhal, Mary and Lebap. Concerts by both local and refugee bands are planned, dancing and singing competitions will be organised and sports activities will be set up for children. A dinner for all attendees will follow.

On 18 June, drawing contests on the theme, "World by Children's Eyes", will be organised among children in Ashgabat, Mary and Türkmenabat. The best drawings will be awarded. An animation film will be shown to children at the end of the competition.

On 19 June, refugee children will be treated to a show of Turkmen Puppet theatre.

UNHCR will organise a ceremony at the railway station to coincide with the repatriation of Tajik refugees from Turkmenistan. This ceremony will include speeches, dances and a reception.

A UNHCR video will be screened on 20 June at the Turkmen-Turkish information centre.
