Barbados
In 2024, UNHCR continued to support refugees and asylum-seekers in Barbados*, where access to employment remains limited and work permits are routinely denied, restricting opportunities for self-reliance and increasing vulnerability to informal work risks.
To help meet urgent needs, UNHCR and its partners provided targeted assistance, including cash support and mental health and psychosocial services. Public outreach and capacity-building activities were also expanded, with virtual training sessions and the distribution of multilingual materials on gender-based violence prevention and referral pathways, in collaboration with local organizations such as BPW Barbados.
*UNHCR’s operations in Barbados are managed by the United States Multi-Country Office, which also oversees activities in the United States and 18 Caribbean States and overseas territories. These include: Anguilla, Antigua and Barbuda, the Bahamas, Dominica, the Dominican Republic, Grenada, Haiti, Jamaica, Saint Kitts and Nevis, Saint Lucia, and Saint Vincent and the Grenadines; the British Overseas Territories of Bermuda, the British Virgin Islands, the Cayman Islands, Montserrat, and the Turks and Caicos Islands; as well as the Dutch Overseas Territory of Sint Maarten, part of the Kingdom of the Netherlands.
