The Central African Republic is grappling with a complex humanitarian situation marked by internal fragility and insecurity in parts of the country. In addition to its own crisis, the country continues to receive refugees fleeing violence in neighboring countries, placing further strain on already limited resources and socio-economic systems. Over 1.4 million Central Africans – nearly one-third of the population – have been forcibly displaced, including more than 469,000 internally displaced and an estimated 1.1 million at risk of statelessness.

Since the outbreak of conflict in Sudan in April 2023, the Central African Republic has welcomed over 25,000 Sudanese refugees. More than 37,000 Chadian refugees and returnees have also arrived at the border, fleeing intercommunal violence.

UNHCR works in close coordination with the Government, NGOs, civil society, and development partners to respond to the protection and assistance needs of displaced populations, while also working to prevent and reduce statelessness. Support is ongoing for the Government’s implementation of its national roadmap under the Global Compact on Refugees. To advance durable solutions, UNHCR facilitated the launch of the CAR Support Solutions Platform in October 2023.
