Morocco
Morocco hosts refugees and asylum-seekers with growing protection needs addressed through strengthened national systems, improved documentation processes, and close collaboration between UNHCR and authorities.
By the end of 2024, UNHCR had registered 18,900 individuals in Morocco from 64 countries. A significant increase in asylum-seekers was recorded, with 4,679 new registrations, primarily Sudanese fleeing the civil war that began in April 2023.
Progress continued in Humanized Border Management, with national authorities presenting a referral mechanism at two events co-organized with UNHCR, CNDH, and key partners. UNHCR also supported capacity-building efforts with trainings for law enforcement and judicial actors, and participation in international forums.
UNHCR and partners responded to 1,083 protection incidents. In a regional first, Morocco’s national census included refugee- and migrant-specific questions, with 104 trained refugees and migrants involved in data collection.
With rising needs, particularly among unaccompanied children, UNHCR remains committed to strengthening protection, documentation, and inclusion across Morocco.
