Chechnya: exodus continues

Briefing notes

Chechnya: exodus continues

16 November 1999

UNHCR's ninth convoy to Ingushetia arrived in Nazran this morning, delivering 108 tonnes of food and 1,000 pairs of winter shoes.

The authorities in Ingushetia have now registered 195,000 displaced people from Chechnya, but the actual number exceeds 200,000.

The exodus continues at a somewhat slower pace than last week, with about 2,000 people crossing the border daily.

High Commissioner for Refugees Sadako Ogata is expected to travel to Russia later today at the request of the Secretary-General. She will meet with Russian officials and possibly travel to Ingushetia later this week.
