World Refugee Day 2002: Kazakhstan

World Refugee Day 2002: Kazakhstan

20 June 2002

Kids play in a neighbourhood populated mostly by Iraqi refugees. Because refugees are not allowed to work in Syria, children often must take informal jobs to help support their families.

The photo exhibition "Refugees in Kazakhstan" was held at the Gallery of Modern Art "Tengri Umai."

A reception, a concert by refugees, a mini photo-exhibition, and a charity fair were organised for the diplomatic corps, government officials, NGOs, and refugee women representatives.

A sports competition for refugee children took place at a local school.

The brochure "UNHCR Activities in Kazakhstan" was published in Russian and English.

The second issue of the quarterly bulletin "Refugees in Kazakhstan" was published and distributed.

Some 250 refugee children participated in a drawing and handicraft competition. The winners were invited to a summer camp in July.
