World Refugee Day 2004: Angola

World Refugee Day 2004: Angola

20 June 2004

UNHCR staff register refugees at the Douma registration center on the outskirts of Damascus. Registering with UNHCR ensures that the most vulnerable refugees receive aid.

In Luanda, the official ceremony was held on 25 June at the theatre of the National Radio of Angola and broadcast live. The show started with the presentation of an UNHCR video spot and slides showing the lives of refugees. Congolese and Rwandan traditional dances and a theatre play on the theme of HIV/AIDS were followed by performances by two famous Angolan groups: "As Gingas de Maculusso" and "Dom Caetano". Refugee women also presented products and handcrafts to sell.

A photo exhibition showing the return of Angolan refugees to their homeland was also inaugurated during the ceremony. This event also included pictures of refugees from Viana and Sungui settlements.

World Refugee Day was also celebrated in UNHCR field offices, which organised various activities in the provinces of Moxico, M'Banza Congo and Cuando Cubango. The celebration promoted the talents of returning Angolan refugees by featuring music, dances, poetry readings and plays.

UNHCR also gave several radio interviews and debates on national and local radio. Interviews were broadcast on the Angolan Public Television (TPA) during the evening news. UNHCR also participated in a local talk show called "Echos and Factos".
