World Refugee Day 2004: Central African Republic

A radio debate was broadcast, featuring discussions between refugees and UNHCR representatives on the World Refugee Day theme as well as awareness programmes. A film, "Young African refugees: Building the future", was also aired on national TV.

In Bangui, there were streamers displaying slogans such as "A refugee also contributes to the development of the host country" and "Let's live in peace, security and dignity with refugees".

A football match was held between refugees and a UN team.

The Ecole des Castors, which was rehabilitated by UNHCR within the framework of the reintegration programme of returnees from the Democratic Republic of the Congo, was officially launched.

An eight-year old girl read a poem on HIV/AIDS. There were also traditional dances and an exhibition/sale of refugee-made products such as art, cakes and sewing.
