Chișinău, 12 September 2025 – UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency in the Republic of Moldova expresses its sincere gratitude to Germany for its generous contribution of EUR 5 million (USD 5.5 million) in 2025, reinforcing its longstanding support to refugees and displaced people worldwide.

Germany is one of UNHCR’s largest humanitarian donors, consistently providing strong support to refugees across the world. Since the onset of the war in Ukraine in February 2022, Germany has been among the key contributors to UNHCR’s response in the region, including the Republic of Moldova, where the humanitarian impact remains significant.

This funding is helping UNHCR assist and protect refugees and stateless persons in Moldova, where more than 1.9 million refugees have crossed the border since February 2022. As of mid-2025, over 70,900 people have been granted Temporary Protection in the country, with thousands more holding other legal statuses. Moldova continues to show remarkable solidarity despite its limited resources.

The contribution from Germany will support UNHCR’s ongoing efforts to ensure access to protection and essential services for refugees and vulnerable Moldovan families. This includes:

  • Strengthening Moldova’s asylum system.
  • Expanding access to legal aid, documentation, healthcare, education, and social protection.
  • Providing targeted assistance to vulnerable groups, including children, survivors of gender-based violence, persons with disabilities, Roma refugees, and others with specific needs.
  • Promoting long-term inclusion through language courses, livelihoods opportunities, and social cohesion initiatives that bring together refugees and host communities.
  • Supporting local authorities and working in partnership with Moldovan NGOs to reinforce national and community-level protection capacities.

In the first half of 2025 alone, UNHCR and partners have reached tens of thousands of people in Moldova with protection and assistance, ranging from legal support and safe shelter to child protection services and livelihood opportunities. Germany’s support will ensure these efforts continue and expand, reinforcing Moldova’s ability to provide safety and dignity for refugees while strengthening local systems for the benefit of all.
