Căușeni Becomes a City of Solidarity: UNHCR and local authorities sign Memorandum of Understanding
Căușeni, 3 December 2024 – The District of Căușeni took an important step in fostering inclusion and support for refugees by signing a Memorandum of Understanding with UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency in the Republic of Moldova. This partnership marks Căușeni as the third locality in Moldova to join the global Cities of Solidarity initiative, which promotes the integration and protection of refugees, asylum seekers, and stateless persons while strengthening the resilience of host communities.
The initiative aims to improve access to essential services, empower local authorities and civil society, and inspire innovative solutions that benefit both displaced populations and host communities. Căușeni’s commitment highlights Moldova’s continued leadership in responding to humanitarian challenges with compassion and collaboration.
"The war is a catastrophe not only for the country but for a whole society and community. We have been and will continue to stand in solidarity with the refugees in Ukraine and work to make them feel at home," said district President Alexandru Catan.
“Căușeni’s commitment to inclusion and solidarity is a demonstration of how local communities can lead by example. By joining the Cities of Solidarity initiative, Căușeni is not only creating opportunities for refugees to rebuild their lives but also strengthening bonds within the community. This partnership showcases the best of what we can achieve when compassion and collaboration come together to build a secure future for all,” emphasized Anne-Marie Deutschlander, UNHCR Moldova Representative.
The partnership sets the stage for tangible actions that will improve infrastructure, build connections across communities, and strengthen local capacities. Together, UNHCR and Căușeni are committed to creating opportunities and fostering solidarity for a bright and shared future.
