Eritrean man reunited with son

An Eritrean man was reunited with his three year old son in Malta following a heartfelt appeal to the Maltese authorities last week.

5 Aug 2014

The three year old boy, Abel, had lost his mother in a tragic traffic accident on their her way from Sudan to Libya. Abel was among several survivors who were cared for in a clinic near Tripoli after the accident.

“I am very, very pleased to be reunited with my son. I thank the Maltese authorities and all those who made it possible for my son to arrive here. he told a group of journalists waiting at the arrivals hall at the airport in Malta.

Tages Gebregzabher was reunited with his son following coordinated efforts by the Maltese Government, the Emigrant’s Commission, the International Medical Corps and the UNHCR offices in Libya and Malta.

In the last weeks the situation in Libya has deteriorated with a number of armed militia fighting for power in different areas of the country. A number of third country nationals have been evacuated either to Tunisia or Malta. More evacuations are expected in the coming days.
