In December 2018, the Member States of the UN General Assembly agreed on the Global Compact on Refugees, with the aim to transform the way the world responds to refugee crises.
UNHCR, together with partners, today in Pristina hosted the open dialogue event on the Global Compact on Refugees. The event aimed raising awareness on the objectives of the Global Compact on Refugees focusing on the importance of protecting and assisting refugees for their integration in Kosovo.
“The Global Compact on Refugees is a new opportunity, a new deal for refugees and the communities hosting them”, said Mr Erol Arduç, Chief of UNHCR Mission in Kosovo.
In particular, partnership is key to achieving a better deal for refugees and their hosts. Everyone has a role to play: the private sector, development agencies and financial institutions, all levels of government, civil society, faith groups, and refugees themselves. We need to strengthen our partnerships in different sectors and forge new ones, in a way that drives innovation.
The participants from the institutions reiterated that they are focused on strengthening of the asylum capacity and in raising protection standards as well as establishing a favorable environment for their integration. They called for wider attendancy in their coordination forums aiming at supporting institutional mechanism for systematic integration.
Mr Murat Sahin, UN Development Coordinator a.i. in Kosovo also addressed the participants during the event.
“It is of utmost importance to reflect on the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, which seeks to ensure that ‘No one is left behind’ and aims to realise ‘human rights for all’. These principles that underpin the 2030 Agenda, provide a powerful basis for inclusion”, said Mr Murat Sahin, UN Development Coordinator a.i. in Kosovo.
The event was also an opportunity for all participants to contribute with ideas on how to ensure early inclusion as well as create an environment conducive to the full legal and socio-economic integration of refugees.
The discussions revealed that refugees should be included in society; they should have opportunities to learn and work, to be able to provide for their families and to contribute to their host communities.
The event was attended by relevant authorities, international and local organizations, donor representatives, financial institutions, civil society, media, academia and partners.
