In Ituri province alone, 1,8 million are displaced in settlements or villages as a result of brutal attacks, mainly by the CODECO (Cooperative for Development of the Congo) and the ADF (Allied Democratic Forces) militia groups. The IDP situation in eastern DRC is part of a wider regional crisis relating to a struggle for control of land and resources as well as fragile infrastructure in the region. The country also hosts 571,000 refugees and asylum seekers. UNHCR is appealing for increased funding to adequately support the rising needs of the displaced in the DRC. More than 1 million Congolese people have also found refuge in neighbouring countries, fleeing recurring violence.d
