Eman is a final-year medical student at Ankara University. Her journey to becoming a doctor began not in a lecture hall, but by following the footsteps of her parents. Eman was born in Syria and immersed in the world of medicine from a young age, as both her parents were doctors. As she neared high school graduation, she explored other options but felt that her passion and purpose were in medicine. "Of course I've had some difficult days," she admits, "but I've never regretted my choice."
Medical education was a tough and long journey. The final year, with the rising costs of exams and study materials, brought its own challenges. At this critical point, the Higher Education Cash Grant (HECG), provided in collaboration with UNHCR and the Presidency for Turks Abroad and Related Communities (YTB), played a vital role for her. The grant provided the financial relief she needed to focus solely on her studies without the stress of additional expenses. "For a student, even the smallest bit of help makes a difference," Eman emphasizes.
Eman's perspective on education is deeply connected to her personal values and beliefs. For her, education is not only about personal achievement, but also one of the fundamental pillars of society. Eman believes that it is a crucial act to pass on any knowledge she has to someone who might benefit from it, even in the smallest way.
As she approaches graduation, Eman aims to specialize in either paediatrics and child health or gynaecology and hopes that her work will have a positive impact on public health. Her biggest dream is to one day return to Syria to use her skills to rebuild her country's healthcare services and support future generations. "Without education," she says, "a person would have a very difficult path to reach their potential." For Eman, education is more than just gaining a profession; it is the key to unlocking potential, earning respect, and contributing to society.
UNHCR Türkiye remains grateful to Sweden for the generous support in 2025, which will enable HECG support to continue for the upcoming semesters and all donors whose flexible funding makes it possible to carry out necessary interventions in the fastest way. In cooperation with YTB, UNHCR has been providing HECG to refugee and asylum seeker students from nationalities other than Syrian since 2014 and Syrian students under temporary protection since 2022, reaching 2,000 beneficiaries annually. Through this support, UNHCR aims to ease the financial barriers refugee students face in their educational journeys, empowering them to build their futures and reach their dreams.
