Greece
At the end of 2019, Greece hosted over 186,000 refugees and asylum-seekers. This included over 5000 unaccompanied children. Most persons of concern were coming from Afghanistan, the Syrian Arab Republic, the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Iran.
UNHCR’s work in Greece focuses on protection needs as well as gradually transitioning the responsibility of large-scale programmes (accommodation, cash-based interventions and programmes for unaccompanied and separated children) to the Greek government. At the end of 2019, Greece was one of UNHCR’s largest operations in Europe.
