Burundi
Burundi
Burundi hosts 300,000 people of concern, including 85,000 refugees and asylum seekers, 25,000 internally displaced persons, 800 people at risk of statelessness and over 185,000 Burundian refugee returnees repatriated by UNHCR since September 2017. Nearly all refugees (99%) are from the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). The returnees have come back from Tanzania, Rwanda, the DRC, Uganda and Kenya.
Nearly 40% of the refugee population resides in urban areas, while the majority are hosted in five camps located in the eastern and northeastern regions of the country. Nearly 110,000 refugee returnees reside in the country's eastern provinces, mainly in Makamba, Ruyigi, Kirundo and Muyinga provinces.
UNHCR's response focuses on providing assistance and protection for the population of concern, including refugees, as well as promoting their inclusion in national systems, enhancing their self-sufficiency, and supporting their attainment of durable solutions.
