Guinea: food distribution resumes in south-east

Food distribution resumed on 2 November in the Kolomba camp, in the Guéckédou area, south-east of Guinea , following a six-week interruption. Kolomba is hosting some 24,000 refugees plus an estimated 2,000 former urban refugees in the Guinean capital Conakry who have now left and joined the camp in late August, following anti-refugee unrest in Conakry.

This distribution will test the feasibility of further ad-hoc deliveries to other camps in the Gueckdou area which hosts more than 200,000 refugees. These camps have not received any aid since mid September, when the killing of a UNHCR worker prompted the agency to suspend its field operations in Guinea. Refugees have now received a 30-day ration including oil and cereals. Another food distribution will probably be undertaken in Kouankan, in the Macenta Prefecture (south-eastern Guinea) for 10,000 Liberian refugees. This operation will be led from Nzérékoré, a bordering region which has had a better security record in the past few weeks.
