On June 13, the Minister of Home Affairs launched Refugee Awareness Week.

A UNHCR film about refugee youth was broadcast on national television. The government, NGOs and UNHCR set up booths to display panels and other items. UNHCR also conducted an outreach project to raise awareness on refugee issues among national students in government and private schools.

The celebrations at Kala camp drew huge crowds.

At Kala camp in northern Zambia, the local community joined the refugees in their World Refugee Day celebrations, which included sports competitions for refugee youth and games for refugee children.

In the Meheba area, the local chief was guest of honour to performances by Angolan, Rwandan, Burundian and Congolese refugees. Refugee youth performed a play on HIV/AIDS prevention and recited poems of peace. There was also a puppet show to sensitise Angolan refugees to the danger of land mines before they return home.
