World Refugee Day 2002: Ethiopia

World Refugee Day 2002: Ethiopia

20 June 2002

Kids play in a neighbourhood populated mostly by Iraqi refugees. Because refugees are not allowed to work in Syria, children often must take informal jobs to help support their families.

Sudanese refugees in Bonga and Sherkole Camps in the west and Somali refugees in Rabasso and Camaboker camps in the east celebrated World Refugee Day together with high-level delegations from the Organisation of African Unity (OAU), the government, and UNHCR, who travelled over 800km from Addis Ababa to observe the occasion.

During the event, the OAU representative Ambassador of Chad and Second Vice-Chairman of the OAU Commission on Refugees presented UNHCR with a cheque of 10,000 US dollars to assist refugee women.

In Addis Ababa, urban refugees, together with OAU, the government, the public, and UNHCR, celebrated World Refugee Day on 25 and 27 June.
