World Refugee Day 2003 National Activity Plan: Uganda
In May, young refugees will be invited to participate in an art and essay competition. Girls' participation will be particularly encouraged. A book will be published with the winning poems, stories and artworks, copies of which will be distributed to schools.
The main celebration will take place in Kyangwali refugee settlement on June 20. Refugee youth groups will perform songs and dances. There will also be a volleyball match by refugee girls and a football match by refugee boys. Right to Play will provide sports equipment and referees.
In Adjumani and Moyo districts, activities will include the formation of a refugee youth band to perform in refugee settlements, organised public debates on various issues surrounding refugee youth, the launching of a fund to construct a youth centre for Adjumani, as well as sports and games.
In Imvepi refugee settlement in Arua district, refugees will perform dances, dramas and poems, while aid agencies will set up exhibition stalls to present their activities.
