World Refugee Day 2004: Eritrea

World Refugee Day 2004: Eritrea

20 June 2004

Kids play in a neighbourhood populated mostly by Iraqi refugees. Because refugees are not allowed to work in Syria, children often must take informal jobs to help support their families.

A reception was organised, with UNHCR staff and government partners, to re-state UNHCR goals.

Artwork from the first returnee child-care centre was exhibited and aimed to present the human connection to the "integrated recovery programme". An information kit with a press release, the High Commissioner's message, the UNHCR mission statement, a repatriation fact sheet, a map of Eritrea with returnee villages, a picture of an artwork exhibition and a poem about this year's theme were distributed.

A lunch also took place with presentations of cultural singing and drama. A UNHCR World Refugee Day T-shirt was given to each person in the camps.
