World Refugee Day 2004 National Activity Plan: Greece
UNHCR will organise a concert in Anogeia, Crete Island (which hosts a reception centre for minors, including unaccompanied minors) and a handicraft exhibition by young asylum seekers.
The agency will hold an essay contest for law students on the theme, "Interception of foreigners illegally entering Greece, with emphasis on protection of refugees and asylum seekers arriving by sea", in cooperation with the Hellenic Society of International Law and International Relations.
A few days ahead of World Refugee Day, UNHCR will organise a press conference and a panel discussion involving refugees and the agency's partners, such as the Greek Council for Refugees and the Social Work Foundation, on the theme, "Solutions for refugees". On this occasion, an exhibition of posters on refugees will take place. The posters will be created by young artists as part of the "creation and design magazine" contest.
To raise awareness on World Refugee Day, posters will be on display on buses and trolleys thanks to the support of the national transport company. A World Refugee Day ad will be published in magazines and newspapers and the World Refugee Day TV spot will be broadcast.
