World Refugee Day 2004 National Activity Plan: Liberia
On 5 June, UNHCR set up a lecture forum chaired by young refugees who spoke about their experiences as yesterday's refugees and today's returnees, and come up with a resolution. UNHCR staff will discuss refugees' rights with an emphasis on the rights of children. The lecture forum will be broadcast on TV and radio.
On 12 June, UNHCR will observe the Day of African Child with UNICEF. Posters and drawings of refugee children will be on display.
In Zwedru, on 20 June, a special radio programme will be aired for Ivorian refugees and a huge white paper will be displayed in the middle of the city for people who want to paint on the theme, "A place to call home".
UNHCR will also organise a distribution of clothes at the Redemption hospital, in the outskirts of Monrovia, where most refugees, returnees and internally displaced people are treated.
The UNHCR World Refugee Day film will be broadcast on two TV channels on 19-20 June. From 5-20 June, UNHCR will also organise TV and radio panel discussions about refugee youth's prospects and challenges. Young refugees and UNHCR staff will participate in a popular radio talk show to answer questions from the public and promote awareness about refugee youth during the week of 20 June.
Articles on refugee youth will be published in three newspapers.
On 16 June, the High Commissioner's speech will be read by the UNHCR Representative and broadcast, as well as a specific speech on Liberian issues.
On 20 June, UNHCR will organise football matches within the refugee camps, involving both refugee and host populations. Stands will be set up to display materials such as posters on HIV/AIDS, World Refugee Day and Refugee Rights. An exhibition of works by young refugees and cultural performances will also be held.
