Papua New Guinea Immigration and Citizenship Service Authority expands its refugee assessment capacity through UNHCR

10 July 2023

To deal with an increased need, Papua New Guinea (PNG) recruited and trained 12 new refugee status determination (RSD) officers in early 2023, better equipping PNG to meet its international obligations under the 1951 Convention relating to the Status of Refugees and the 1967 Protocol.

With support from PNG Institutional Partnerships Program (PIPP) advisors, two UNHCR trainers from the Multi-Country Office in Australia delivered a week-long workshop in Port Moresby from 19 to 23 June 2023. The Asylum and Refugee Protection Workshop strengthened understandings of the international protection framework, RSD, interviewing techniques and procedural standards. A total of 26 participants joined from both the Immigration and Citizenship Service Authority (ICSA) of Papua New Guinea and the Solomon Islands Immigration Division (SIID).
