Supporting fair and efficient asylum procedures in Central Asia
UNHCR helps to save lives and build better futures for the millions of people forced to flee their homes.
UNHCR established offices in Central Asia in response to the 1992-93 civil war in Tajikistan and the war in northern Afghanistan that had displaced thousands of people. As these displacement situations stabilised, and the displaced populations reduced, UNHCR shifted focus from emergency response to advocacy and capacity building.
In Central Asia, UNHCR supports governments to strengthen asylum systems, integrate refugees, eradicate statelessness, and build emergency response capacity.
The UNHCR Representation to Central Asia is based in Almaty, managing UNHCR activities across the Republic of Kazakhstan, the Kyrgyz Republic, the Republic of Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, and the Republic of Uzbekistan.
Key facts and figures
