Statelessness: teaching materials ages 9-12

In this age group, you can anticipate that children can focus for around an hour on any given topic. Reading and writing is often involved but the tasks focus mostly on interaction between peers and with the teachers.

Children are encouraged to think of their own experiences and link them to topics being addressed. They are also encouraged to work in pairs or groups and to listen and take in other people’s perspectives.

UNHCR's video material for this age group tells the story of a stateless child of the same age as the pupils through discussion of upbeat, familiar and relevant topics such as their home life, hobbies, toys, school life and future dreams.

Giorgi's story

Giorgi and his mother Madona live in Georgia. For years, Giorgi could not go to school because he was stateless and had no identity papers to enrol in his school. So he studied at home by himself and helped his mother out. Giorgi did get his documents eventually. He is now enjoying school.
