Unlocking Talent: A toolkit for supporting refugee employability

Since 2019, Ingka Group has supported 3,700 refugees to develop the skills they need to integrate into the workforce. With UNHCR’s support, Ingka has created this toolkit to share their experiences and lessons learned so far, and to inspire other businesses to act.

Welcome. Working for Refugee Integration

Italy's ‘Welcome. Working for Refugee Integration’ programme promotes the involvement of the private sector, in conjunction with institutions and civil society organizations, in the labor inclusion of refugees in Italy. Employers can offer internships, apprenticeships, on-the-job training, and different types of contracts. Participating companies can apply to be ‘certified’ with a ‘’Welcome: Working for Refugee Integration’’ logo. By using the logo in their communication, the recipients show their commitment to leading by example in offering integration opportunities for refugees.​  Read more about what makes the program a success here, including its multistakeholder approach and close-knit collaboration between companies and civil society organisations, along with the factors that motivate companies to sign up and renew their commitment year after year.

Refugees As Employees: Good Retention, Strong Recruitment underscores the business case for hiring refugees, showing that refugees have significantly higher retention rates than their non-refugee counterparts and that businesses that hire refugees tend to have a recruitment advantage, among other benefits. Refugee Employment: Perspectives for businesses, policymakers & intermediaries  Commissioned by the World Bank’s Private Sector for Refugees Platform, this publication delves into the tangible benefits that businesses can derive from hiring refugees – from enhanced cultural competence and creativity to expanded market reach and improved employee retention.

How Hiring Refugees Helps Brands: Europe  This research commissioned by The Tent Partnership for Refugees revealed that European consumers are broadly supportive of brands taking concrete actions to support refugees. Report findings available here.

A New Home at Work: An Employer's Guidebook to Fostering Inclusion for Refugee Employees: Draws on first-hand research into effective employee experiences to propose a 6-pronged approach to fostering refugee inclusion in the workplace. 

Employers' Guide: A Quickstart Guide for Inclusive Hiring 
Migration Summit guide outlining best practices for hiring and onboarding, common barriers and solutions to refugee hiring and integration, benefits for businesses, a directory of support organizations, and more. 

Inclusive Recruitment Checklist 
Developed by Renaisi to support employers to embed more inclusivity into their recruitment approaches and workplace, with a refugee-specific focus. Although developed for the UK context, hiring managers/recruiters could adapt the tool to their country context by replacing with corresponding information from the country sub-pages or resource pages of National REPs.  

Research on refugees’ contributions to national economies

Analysis of the impact of refugees from Ukraine on the economy of Poland  
Following Russia’s war on Ukraine, Poland's society and business community opened its arms to refugees from Ukraine. The rapid institutional response and simplified employment procedures also led to significant positive economic outcomes as well, collectively raising the country’s GDP. Engaging with employers in the hiring of refugees - A 10-point multi-stakeholder action plan for employers, refugees, governments and civil society  Draws on extensive consultations by UNHCR & OECD with employers and others who play a key role in promoting the integration of refugees in local and national labour markets, and sets out a clear way forward through a checklist of actions.

Launch event

The Regional Information Hub for the REP and resources contained in the ‘’Guidance for businesses’’ section were introduced in a regional virtual event held in March 2025, which showcased results of National Refugee Employment Platforms and featured testimonies from companies and refugees.
