Invitation to participate in Video and Storytelling Lab

UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency, and KARPOS – Center of Education & Intercultural Communication are pleased to announce the launch of an interactive Video and Storytelling Lab, in Athens.

The Lab aims to:

  • Explore various visual story-telling techniques and tools, in theory and in practice
  • Enhance participants’ technical skills in all stages of video creation: from scriptwriting to editing and post-production
  • Empower participants to tell stories in an informative, compelling and effective manner and structure storytelling through personal experiences
  • Provide a platform for these stories to be heard and to reach a wider audience

By the end of the sessions, participants will be able to produce in small groups, in pairs or individually, short videos, either fiction or documentary.

Duration: 10 sessions, 3 hours each

Languages: English or Greek (depending on the main language the majority of the participants use)

Location: Sarri 4, Athens (5’ from Monastiraki station), 1st floor, Karpos premises

Who can apply: Greek citizens and people with refugee or migrant background, who are above 18 years old, reside in Athens and have basic skills or strong interest in video creation. Applicants are required to have a good knowledge of English or Greek.

How you can apply: By filling in this form by Wednesday, 7 December 2022.

KARPOS and UNHCR will deliver a Certificate of Participation to participants who will attend the entire or at least 90% of the workshops.

Content:

  • Basics of story-telling structure: theory in a simplified manner
  • Photography techniques for beginners and medium level users. Still image recording
  • How short films tell stories: screenings. Discussion on storytelling
  • Develop ideas from our everyday life
  • Creative writing on groups’ ideas for personal narratives
  • Photostories as a basis of narrative
  • Visualising a story
  • Video examples related to groups’ stories
  • Basics of video shooting with mobile phone and camcorder
  • Refining a core idea/ title and structure of short videos
  • Shootings
  • Reviewing of raw materials, selection techniques for editing
  • Reshooting
  • Refine voice overs, test recordings, pre-post production

Karpos

Since its creation in 2008, KARPOS promotes hands-on and participatory learning through the development of media workshops for adults and for youth. KARPOS’ working methods facilitate the exchange of information, providing experience and building capacity and new skills through audio visual tools. Through national and international projects, KARPOS built a strong experience in designing and implementing training in media education especially adapted to vulnerable and minority groups.
