Good Enough Guide: Impact Measurement and Accountability in Emergencies (Oxford University School of Geography and the Environment, 2014)
This pocket-size guide is a collaborative effort of seven international NGOs and aims to provide clear, concise, and practical guidance to humanitarian practitioners. It offers a set of basic guidelines on how to be accountable to local people and measure programme impact in emergency situations. “Good enough” means acknowledging that, in an emergency response, safe, simple, and easy to implement approaches may be the only practical option.
Introduction to Evaluating Humanitarian Action
Is an e-learning course developed in partnership by ALNAP and UNICEF, in collaboration with EvalPartners and UNEG. It offers an overview of evaluation practice in humanitarian contexts, and features concrete guidance, tips and insights from experienced practitioners. The course is composed of 10 units and includes lectures, readings, and tests. After successfully finishing all 10 units, participants will receive a certificate of completion.
Evaluation of Humanitarian Action Guide (ALNAP, 2016)
This ALNAP guide consolidates current knowledge about initiating, managing and completing an evaluation of humanitarian action and serves as a common reference point for humanitarian evaluators. Although evaluation of humanitarian action faces many of the same challenges as international development, a number of these are accentuated due to the volatile contexts in which humanitarians operate and the nature of the work undertaken.
Evaluating Humanitarian Innovation (HIF/ALNAP, 2017)
This working paper proposes a way of framing and conceptualising the evaluation of humanitarian innovation, in complement to ALNAP’s Evaluation of Humanitarian Action (EHA) Guide. It aims to address the perspective of both the evaluator and the innovator, introducing the range of evaluative practice that may be relevant to innovation processes, as well as the concepts and evaluative criteria that are relevant to carrying out a summative evaluation of a humanitarian innovation.
Monitoring Humanitarian Innovation (HIF/ALNAP, 2017)
In the context of humanitarian innovation, monitoring is particularly important due to the uncertain nature of the work. Current monitoring approaches are rarely tailored for innovation contexts. Based on an analysis of 15 initiatives funded by the Humanitarian Innovation Fund (HIF), this working paper proposes a new framework – ALNAP Innovation Milestones – for monitoring an innovation’s progress towards success.
