This year, our Refugee Film Festival enters its 17th year, UNHCR focuses on solidarity with refugees – for a world where refugees are welcomed, sharing more stories of refugees and solidarity with the Hong Kong audience. 

"We Dare to Dream" Post-Screening Sharing Session

On 30 June, Ms Yip Pui Yin, the Hong Kong Badminton Star, will give a post-screening speech sharing her own athletic experience and feelings towards “We Dare to Dream.” 

Seats are limited, so registration is on a first-come, first-served basis. Successful registration will be emailed within 3 working days.

Participants who successfully registered and attended the post-screening sharing session on 30 June can redeem our limited-edition ice towel by presenting the ticket or online purchase proof of “We Dare To Dream” on-site or via email by 14 July. Redemption is available on a first-come-first-serve basis and while stocks last. Details of the redemption will be provided later.

This year’s Refugee Film Festival will be hosted from 15 June to 7 July, 2024.   

The Old Oak

The Old Oak is a special place. Not only is it the last pub standing, it is the only remaining public space where people can meet in a once thriving mining community that has now fallen on hard times after 30 years of decline. TJ Ballantyne (Dave Turner) the landlord hangs on to The Old Oak by his fingertips, and his hold is endangered even more when the pub becomes contested territory after the arrival of Syrian refugees who are placed in the village. An unlikely friendship develops when TJ encounters a young Syrian with a camera, Yara (Ebla Mari). Can they find a way for the two communities to understand each other? So unfolds a deeply moving drama about loss, fear and the difficulty of finding hope.

We Dare to Dream

We Dare to Dream is the story of refugee athletes from Iran, Syria, South Sudan and Cameroon who swim, run and fight their way to opportunity and safety in host nations across the world. Spanning a breadth of backgrounds, personal stories and Olympic sports, the film reveals their lives and hopes as they train to compete on the world stage, showing the fire and the drive of young people forced to leave their families, homes and countries of birth to build new lives out of nothing.
