Jordan hosts one of the world’s largest refugee populations per capita, with around 600,000 refugees registered with UNHCR - primarily Syrians, alongside Iraqis, Yemenis, Sudanese, Somalis, and others. Around 81% live in urban areas rather than camps, placing considerable pressure on Jordan’s infrastructure and host communities.

Despite these challenges, Jordan continues to lead by example, including refugees in national systems such as health and education, and allowing Syrians to work in designated sectors. UNHCR works in close partnership with the Government of Jordan, national institutions, and international partners to deliver protection and assistance to both refugees and affected Jordanian communities.

Through regular cash assistance, UNHCR supports vulnerable refugees to meet their basic needs. It has also pioneered innovative approaches, such as distributing assistance via mobile wallets, enhancing flexibility, security, and autonomy for recipients.

UNHCR maintains a strong presence in Jordan, operating from three main offices in Amman, Irbid, and Mafraq, and active engagement in the Azraq and Zaatari refugee camps. In these camps, UNHCR leads on camp coordination and a wide range of services including protection, shelter, livelihoods, energy, and community outreach.

More than a decade into the Syria crisis, the refugee response in Jordan is facing a critical funding gap. UNHCR is working closely with the government, donors, and partners to sustain essential services and strengthen long-term support for both refugees and host communities.

Syria’s protracted conflict has displaced over 5.6 million people across the region, including approximately 600,000 Syrians currently registered in Jordan, underscoring the Kingdom’s vital role in the regional response.
